Mrs. Pleasant said after meeting John Brown (assumed to be May 1858) she traveled to several plantations, dressed as a jockey, to spread the word of the upcoming uprising. Some have doubted this while others have noted that it aligns with tales about word being spread amongst slave quarters in the months prior to the start of the Civil War. Brown raided Harper’s Ferry in October 1859 and was executed outside the Charles Town, Virginia Courthouse on December 2, 1859. It is interesting nonetheless to plot the supposed location of the plantations she named, they range from Virginia, North and South Carolina to Louisiana. Link to map. Red dots are well known plantation locations and adjacent to the Roanoke River. Yellow-orange are potential and unconfirmed locations. The location of the John Nelson plantation is uncertain. The First potential location in NC is accessible via the Roanoke into the Albermarle Sound or via other rivers. The second location is far removed in Louisiana outside New Orleans. Verification research is ongoing.
