An oft retold story about MEP was her meeting with John Brown in Chatham, Ontario, Canada where she provided money for his planned activities to free the enslaved. Some have dismissed this as not possible given the travel times required. However, by 1858, it took less time to travel from the West Coast via steamship than it did in 1852. Why? Because a cross-isthmus railroad was constructed across the Panama isthmus in __. This made a greater than 4 week cross-isthmus trip into a less than 1 day train-ride. Given this information and more, we can believe that Mrs. Pleasant and her husband John J were in Canada to meet with John Brown as MEP said more than once. Another piece of evidence to support the story is that while in Canada, they purchased property for people crossing the Canadian border for freedom.
Another anecdote about MEP has her helping to rescue her former brother in law, Augustus Calvert Dunn from slavers. Mr. Dunn was reportedly captured either in Philadelphia or Ohio. His wife, Caroline Park Dunn, contacted MEP and asked for help. Dunn’s freedom was at some point secured and the Dunn family went to Canada. In 1859, Mr Dunn also acquired Canadian property. Deed records are available confirming these transactions. The Dunns remained there for only a few years, returning to Ohio by 1863. In August 1862, Mr Dunn would sing a Power of Attorney document to manage the Canadian property. And in 1871, Mrs Dunn would sell the property after Mr. Dunn’s death. Caroline Park Dunn would pass away in 1876 of consumption. Her last will and testament designated that her wordly goods go to her three nieces, Rebecca Jane Howard and Anna (aka Indiana) Howard and Sarah Jane Cooper. In an interesting note, a codicil was made to the will that if Rebecca Jane decided to move to Liberia, her share of items would go to Sarah Jane. Rebecca would not go to Liberia but to San Francisco where she would remain. Anna (aka Indiana) would also follow suit immigrating to California, as would a few of their cousins, who all were in MEP’s orbit.
In 1858, Caroline Park Dunn’s brother, John Park of Philadelphia…would have a daughter whom he named Mary Ellen, perhaps a nod of respect and thanks to MEP for her efforts to secure the freedom of is brother in law, Augustus Dunn.
After meeting John Brown in 1858 MEP and JJ became members of the Chatham Vigilance Committee. One of the Committee’s first acts was to rescue of a New Jersey teen Sylvanus Demarest.
